Hello all,
The summer is well and truly over so it's time you boys and girls keep yourselves at home, curl up on the sofa with a nice cuppa and enjoy what the boob tube has got to offer. With this in mind, every week we'll be detailing the latest films premiering on Sky Movies.
This coming week we have three diverse films premiering, there's a drama, a comedy and an action thriller.
 |
L-R Damon Sr, Keenan, Damien, Shawn, Marlon |
|
|
First of we have the latest in the 'lets take the mick of films in a particular genre' films,
Dance Flick and as you can imagine one or more of the Wayans brood (pictured) are involved.
This time we have the up and coming Damon Jr - whose father Damon Sr is most known for playing Michael Kyle from '
My Wife and Kids' - in the lead role of Thomas, with his love interest (Megan) played by the little known newcomer Shoshana Bush.
 |
Sugar Bear |
This "flick" directed by Damien Wayans sees the white suburban girl Megan move to the inner city in pursuit of her dream as a dancer, where meets the nerdy/streetwise Thomas who also has a passion for dance.
However Thomas is unable to fully immerse into the world of dance as he is stuck working for the ridiculously obese gang leader 'Sugar Bear',
As expected there are cameos by the other Wayanseseses, look out for Keenan, Shawn and Marlon. Of course there are parodies of many films both in and out of the dance film genre (we count 42) which we love, but you'll find that there are more misses than hits.
All in all, if you're not tired of the parody/mick taking genre this one would be right up your alley, but if you are you should avoid this one.

Next we have the latest in the franchise that solidified Arnie 'the governator' Schwarzenegger as a box office monster,
Terminator Salvation.
 |
Bale as John Connor |
It was on the set of this film that we heard the
recording Christian Bale (pictured) going absolutely ape faeceas at the director of photogaphy
Shane Hulrburt for walking into a scene.
This fourth instalment of the Terminator franchise sees Bale in the role of the lead and saviour of mankind John Connor, set in 2018 the much anticipated Judgement day has begun and mankind is fighting for its existence.
Conner leads a group of the humans on an attack of the Skynet headquarters, when he gets there he stumbles on human prisoners and plans for a new type of terminator using human tissue.
If you don't mind seeing some shooting and explosions we recommend catching this one, it does well in pulling together the plots of the previous three films. This is an essential view for those who love the previous instalments and want to find out what happens to Mr Connor. For this who wanted to see Arnie reprise his role, don't hold your breath although he does make a very brief cameo (come on the guy does have a day job you know).

THE GEEK PICK
Lastly but by no means least, we have the touching and harrowing
The Soloist.
 |
Nathaniel Ayers |
Directed by Joe Wright, the English gent who brought you 2005's Pride and Prejudice and the Oscar nominated Atonement, this film is based on a book, about a true story.
The book
'The Soloist: A Lost Dream, an Unlikely Friendship and the Redemptive Power of Music' was written by American journalist Steve Lopez and was based on his column about his friendship with schizophrenic bassist Nathaniel Ayers (pictured).
With the history lesson out of the way, the film follows Lopez played by Robert Downey Jr who is an unhappy sod to say the least, recently divorced and working for his ex wife (then again that would make anyone an unhappy sod) this journalist hears a violin being played beautifully and goes to investigate.
 |
Jamie Foxx as Nathaniel Ayers |
He finds Nathaniel Ayers played by award winner Jamie Foxx, a homeless schizophrenic and during their conversation he learns that Ayers was a child prodigy and once attended the world famous (and super hard to get into unless you're a genius) Juilliard school. Lopez finding he had nothing better to write about for his column decides to write about Ayers and does some investigation to find Ayer's sister in order to find out more about the former child genius.
We'll stop there and leave the rest for you to watch and be touched by, we're sure you will see why this was the
Geek Pick. Once more Mr Foxx shows his ability to portray a real life character, you only have to see his work on
Ray and
Redemption: The Stanley Tookie Williams Story to see why he was the perfect choice.
So there you have it, a diverse choice of films to get your teeth into come back next week for a rundown of premiering films.
Happy Viewing
The Geeks
